A simple lock audit helps a business understand what it has before requesting repairs, rekeying, or upgrades. The audit does not require opening or disassembling hardware. It is a visual and operational record of doors, keys, users, and recurring problems.
01Create a door-by-door list
Give each controlled opening a clear name, such as Front Customer Door, Rear Employee Door, Office 2, Records Room, or Exterior Storage. Record whether it is an exterior or interior opening and who should be allowed to use it.
02Check ordinary operation
Without forcing anything, note whether the door closes fully, the latch engages, the key turns normally, and the deadbolt reaches the strike. Record unusual movement, scraping, looseness, or a need to push or lift the door. A lock problem may actually involve alignment or door condition.
03Record key control
- How many keys are known to exist?
- Who currently holds each key?
- Are any keys missing or unreturned?
- Which doors does each key open?
- Is there a process for issuing and returning copies?
A complete record may reveal that the immediate need is rekeying, while the longer-term need is a better key-issue process.
04Identify different access levels
Not every employee needs access to every room. Mark common entrances separately from management offices, inventory, files, cash-handling areas, utilities, or other restricted spaces. This information is necessary before discussing keyed-alike or master-key options.
05Photograph the complete opening
Take one photo of the full door and closer photos of both sides of the lock, the door edge, and the strike area. Photos cannot answer every technical question, but they can help identify the hardware and prepare for an on-site review.
06Flag specialized hardware
Mark storefront doors, panic or exit hardware, electronic access equipment, fire-rated openings, gates, safes, and any system connected to alarms or building controls. These items may require different preparation or coordination.
07Rank findings by priority
Use three simple categories:
- Urgent: the property cannot be secured or an authorized person cannot access it.
- Operational: the lock works inconsistently or key control is unclear.
- Planned: the business wants a future convenience or access upgrade.
